Bawarchi: The quintessential middle-class family captured on film.What can you say about Hrishida? The most underrated Indian director of all time (and primarily because he made comedies) because somehow laughing and cinema doesn't equal greatness. Even as a kid, as I watched this amazing film, I couldn't help but marvel at this middle-class family with all its flaws and idiosyncrasies but still fun to be a part of.
Maya Bazaar (Telugu): India's most amazing special effects movie. There is not a single Telugu (my age and upwards) who has not seen this movie a 100 times. Made in the 1950s it has amazing special effects that still stand the test of time, great actors, superb songs and mindblowing adventure. At every opportunity, with every uncle, aunt and gullible relative, I sneaked away to watch this film.
Sagara Sangamam (Telugu): The only tragedy I've ever fallen in love with. Back in college, when I saw this film it moved me for days. I realised that a powerful film needn't always be over the top. It helped me realise and draw that very important line between drama and melodrama. And for Telugus, it was another gem from K Vishwanath, who ushered in a new era of filmmaking with the phenomenal Shankara Bharanam
Albela: It's the ultimate musical. I saw Bhagwan dada doing Shaam Dhale Khidki Tale and was mesmerised. In my opinion, there is not a single film that has so many amazing songs. And like a true Bollywood film, it has everything romance, drama, comedy, tragedy and that one sadly missing ingredient today innocence!
Magnolia: I can'stop watching this film about completely dysfunctional relationships. What makes it fascinating, is the true humanity of these everyday characters and finding joy in the most hopeless of situations.
