The audience at a Lower Parel bookstore were at their attentive best. Author Ken Follett who was in town to promote his latest novel Fall of Giants patiently answered questions from his fans with a dash of his Welsh humour. CS spoke to this iconic writer about his latest book and tryst with India:
Ken Follett
It's different
Fall of Giants is much longer than a usual Ken Follett novel. Also, when someone hears about my books, they associate them with suspense and espionage. Well, this book has those elements but a lot of drama and history as well.
The First World War, Russian Revolution and the struggle for women's suffrage forms the novel's backdrop. According to me, the success of book is gauged by its capacity to emotionally involve its reader. If a reader experiences anxiety, indignation, fear, sadness while reading a book, it's bound to be successful.u00a0
On my bookshelf
I love Ian Fleming and James Bond. I read a lot of Anthony Trollope, a Victorian English writer. As a child,
the Enid Blyton series was my favourite. My fiveu00a0 all-time books reads are Oliver Twist, To Kill A Mocking Bird, The Mill On The Floss, The Grapes Of Wrath and Pride and Prejudice.u00a0
India connect
India is a deeply spiritual country but the new young India is more materialistic. The towering skyscrapers, malls, buildings show the economic power of this country. Five years ago, when I came here I visited places like Taj Mahal and old Delhi. I also love Indian food but find it very fattening (laughs).u00a0
