V K Murthy, the first cinematographer to be chosen for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award on Tuesday, thanked late filmmaker Guru Dutt for giving him the opportunity to work in films. CS lists down the octogenarian's filmy
journey:
>>Murthy's first break came from filmmaker Maharana Pratap, where he assisted cinematographer Dronacharya.
>>Some of Murthy's best work is found in Guru Dutt's movies like Pyaasa, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and Aar-Paar. He never worked with other directors as long as Dutt was alive.
>>Murthy shot India's first cinemascope (75mm) movie, Kaagaz Ke Phool starring Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman. The shot where he bathed Waheeda in a single beam of white light defined his future.
>>He repeated the feat for Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and won the 1962 Filmfare Award.
>>He then worked with Kamal Amrohi on his masterpiece, Pakeezah and Razia Sultan.
>>Murthy has also worked with Shyam Benegal on his Discovery of India series and with Pramod Chakravarthy for Naya Zamana and Jugnu, and with Govind Nihalani for Tamas.
>>He was awarded the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony held at Amsterdam in 2005.
