Actor Neena Gupta was last seen as Salman Khan's mother in Veer, and as Shobha in the TV drama Ladies Special. She is now awaiting the release of her next film Na Ghar Ke Na Ghaat Ke, where she plays the role of a simple village mom. She talks to CS about playing mother in reel and real life:
Having a blast
In my next film, Na Ghar Ke Na Ghaat Ke, I am playing the role of Rahul Aggarwal's mother. She is a simple village woman who's very fond of her son, and will go to any extent to protect him. It's a sweet character. I loved the experience of working on this film as the shoot was very organised and the director knew what he wanted. I bonded well with all the seasoned and young actors in the film too. Recently, I finished working on a Punjabi film, Chavan Darya, where I am the mother of the leading lady. The movie deals with drug trafficking in Punjab, and has an interesting concept.
Hunting for a great role
Well, I enjoyed my character in Ladies Special, but I haven't got any good offers recently. I like portraying real characters, which are few on television. The audience is used to melodrama, which I don't enjoy. Nowadays, high-pitched dramas are faring well, and people want to see those types of shows only. It's a Catch-22 situation. There are hardly any interesting substantial roles for older women in TV, I don't want to play a mother time and again.
Hobbies
I enjoy watching Balika Vadhu on television. Though it might seem like a regressive show, it sends out a very progressive message. I watch a lot of foreign shows on DVD like Brothers And Sisters, Grave Anatomy and many more. I listen to a lot of Hindi classical music. Reading is one of my biggest passions. I recently went for the literature festival in Jaipur. Currently, I am reading Prem Chand, Nine Lives and Jinnah.
Doting mother
My daughter, Masaba and I have similar tastes in fashion. We bounce ideas off each other. She is very individualistic like me. At the same time, she is open to criticism. Masaba has just started her business, so I spend a lot of time helping her in matters like keeping accounts, inventory, overseeing things and all. I am busy doing a mother's work!
