On a long ride

"I love my bike. I cherish it. I even drool over it. If I referred to my bike as a he, I would be gay!" says director and bike afficionado Sanjay Gupta. Sanjay is the proud owner of a Harley Davidson and a Royal Enfield Classic 500 and gets withdrawal symptoms if he doesn't ride for a week. CS cruises along with Sanjay:

Childhood obsession

It all started with cycles; as a kid, I was a state level cyclist. When I entered college in 1985, I got my first bike ufffd a Hero Honda CP100. I used to drive to college, and then to meet my girlfriend-now-wife Anuradha, who lived at Carmichael Road. Then the fascination with bikes transcended on to screen. When I shot my first film Aatish in 1995, the opening song 'Dil Dil Dil' was on a bike. Even films like Kaante and Musafir had bike sequences.

Me and my machine

For me, riding a bike is like meditating. It totally relaxes me. There are times when my bike and I become one; it's akin to attaining nirvana! And I am very possessive of the time I spend with my bike; I simply have to drive down every weekend to Khandala, Lonavala or Pune. And my friends and I make a Goa road trip once every year. But I am not a speed junkie. I like riding for the sheer joy of it. My wife also loves bikes, so I have found the perfect companion. Even when I am shooting in some remote place in India, I arrange to get my bikes there.

Favourite drive

Whenever, I am shooting abroad, I hire a Harley and set off to explore locations both for biking and my film. My favourite stretch is the Garden Route in South Africa. The drive from Cape Town to the Cape of Good Hope is unbelievable. On one side, you have the lovely Table Mountains, while on the other, is the vast ocean. Enroute, you pass through charming vineyards, quaint English and French towns; it's incredible. The view from Chapman's Peak is awesome. I also enjoy the breakfast runs to Stellenbosch, 30 miles from Cape Town.
Safety first

Touchwood, I have never experienced a breakdown in my life. But I am quite handy with the basics of the machine. And I never ever ride without my complete gear, ie boots, jacket, helmet, gloves. I have had a car accident where I was declared dead, so safety always comes first. But let me tell you that every biker has fallen once from his bike. No one is invincible!
