What's it about: Back in the day, Blair Witch Project was one of the most searched and discussed topic on the Internet.u00a0 The movie that came out nowhere went on to become one of the biggest hits of the year.

Paranormal Activity has a similar story to tell. Made on a morsel budget of $15,000 in a stripped down elementary setting, the film's marketing strategy catapulted it into becoming one of the most successful films of the last year. Micah (Sloat) and Katie (Featherston) are being troubled by strange noises in their new house.

So much that they can't catch a wink without getting spooked. Micah decides to find the cause of the paranormal activity by setting up a night vision camera in their bedroom which captures every small movement throughout the night. Throw inu00a0 an Ouija board and a psychic and we have the makings of a horror film.u00a0

What's hot: The premise is ingenious. A young couple trapped in a haunted house with nowhere to go. Watching two unknown faces play themselves in an eerie environment works on a subconscious level. The dialogue is basic and the event unfolds at a natural pace.

There is no rush or hurry to build up the impending climax. Oren Peli infuses life into his camera making into a character that participates in the proceeding rather than being a standby machine. Both Micah and Katie have a natural comfort with each other which makes the film more believable.

What's not: Paranormal Activity suffers from the Snakes On A Plane syndrome. The hype and the pre-release chatter doesn't sustain when you watch the actual material. It's definitely not the scariest thing to come out of Hollywood and I wouldn't take Steven Spielberg's (who made money off the film) word when he says it gave him sleepless nights.

Impatience might be a big bump in the road when you keep expecting the lights to go off, or the door to creak or something to pop out of nowhere. Nothing happens for a really long time. And once the activity begins, it gets pretty much predictable. The ghost or soul that makes everything happen is boring, perhaps a few Red Bull cans would have lifted his 'spirits'.

What to do: Watch it out of curiosity, but don't expect do be scared out of your wits! Blair Witch was far more superior as a story and in technique than this snooze inducing activity.
