Small town, big dreams

Shubham Kumar (21) can’t contain his excitement about theupcoming Lakme Fashion Week. The young designer, who is in his final year at Inter National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD), Chandigarh, has been selected to showcase his collection at the Gen Next section of the fashion week, that kicks off in Mumbai tomorrow. “I was very excited to know that I have been selected. I will not only get to showcase my designs on such a big platform but will also be able to meet top designers, which I am really looking forward to,” said Kumar, who is the youngest of the six Gen Next designers selected this season and the only male out of them.u00a0

Creative
Kumar spent his early years in Jalalpur, a village in Uttar Pradesh before his family shifted to Meerut. He always dreamt big and after finishing school, the youngster decided his calling lay in the field of fashion. Impressed with his sheer determination, his parents gave in too and he enrolled himself in INIFD. “I was always looking to join a creative field and my parents supported me with that. They didn’t know too much about this profession and were not aware what it really entailed but they trusted me and wanted me to do what I liked,” shared Kumar.

Inspiration
His life’s experiences have influenced his collection. “As a child when I used to go to my village during the holidays to meet my relatives, I used to see that the majority of males wore khadi there. I got really interested and finally now after so many years, I’ve got the option of using the same textile in my first collection,” he said. The collection, titled India Lives Here, contains 12 outfits. Kumar has used earthy tones like grey, browns, beige and a contrast of black and white, to portray the life story of those Indians who work hard in the agricultural and handloom sectors and make the wheels of the nation’s economy turn. u00a0Other than Mahatma Gandhi, Kumar also idolises designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee and is hopeful that one day, he’ll get a chance to work under him.
