Taz and all that jazz

'I've been waiting, for a long, long time' crooned Stereo Nation in the 90s and we couldn't stop grooving to the foot-tapping number. Well, we've been waiting for a long, long time for the band to make a comeback. "We are now ready," says an enthusiastic Taz (lead vocalist of Stereo Nation) who's just finished recording three songs for Gurinder Chada's next film. He speaks to CS about the band's sudden disappearing act:



Striking again
Life is a rollercoaster ride with its share of highs and lows. In the past, I've had problems with record labels, but that stormy phase seems to be over finally. The Lord has blessed me again and given me the wings to fly once more. Even though I've been away from the media glare, I have been delivering hits like Mehbooba from the Hollywood flick New York Minute, It's Magic from Koi Mil Gaya and the more recent Chori Chori Akhiyan from Race. I believe in giving my fans quality rather than quantity, so I haven't released albums just for the sake of releasing them. But, we're ready now and it feels good to be making a comeback. And what's better is that our kind of music (fusion) is really popular in India now.

All for fusion
It's flattering to know that the industry has embraced fusion and that it is now evolving and touching the hearts of millions of music lovers. But the kind of music that I enjoy listening to is very different from the music that I produce. I think that music is a universal language and it does not matter whether you understand the words, as long as the music touches your heart. My main listening pleasure is old school Funk, Motown, Soul and Arabic, and Spanish music.

Dreaming big
Though I might enjoy listening to recent numbers, I don't wish that I'd sung any of them. Wishing is for wishful thinkers, doing is what really matters. I am an action driven person and I like taking up new challenges. Life's a journey and one should be open to experimenting with new things. When I acted in Don't Stop Dreaming, it was a challenge that I enjoyed.
