Achyut Potdar, 91, a veteran Marathi actor well remembered for his memorable 'Kehna Kya Chahte Ho' speech in 3 Idiots, died on Monday, August 18. He died at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, where he had been admitted due to health difficulties. Hours later, Aamir Khan expressed his sadness over his 3 Idiots co-star's death.

Aamir Khan's production house issued a heartfelt statement, "I am very saddened to hear about Achyutji's passing away. He was an amazing actor, a wonderful human being, and a great colleague. We will miss you, Achyutji. My heartfelt condolences to his family."


Dr. Ravindra Ghawat, Director, Criminal Care Department, Jupiter Hospital, told PTI, "He was admitted to the hospital in a serious condition with respiratory and heart problems on Monday, about 4 p.m. He was put in the ICU. He died around 10:30 p.m. from cardiac problems caused by his high blood pressure and poor cardiovascular condition."



All about Achyut Potdar

Potdar was born in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, to a Marathi Brahmin family. He graduated in Economics in 1961, entered the Indian Army through an emergency commission during the India-China war, and retired as Captain in 1967.

After retirement, he served as an executive with Indian Oil Corporation for 25 years, retiring in 1992 at the age of 58. During this period, he became involved in cultural and theatrical activities, which fueled his desire to act.

He made his acting debut in the 1980 film Aakrosh, which starred Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, and Smita Patil. He went on to appear in more than 125 Hindi and Marathi films altogether.

Celebs pen heartfelt notes for the late actor

Director Hansal Mehta also remembered the veteran actor and penned a note with a lot of love and warmth. Taking to his official X account, Mehta penned: “I was a fan of his character as Jaggu dada’s father. The line ‘Ae Jaggu’ from Angaar made me his permanent fan. Was a privilege to have directed him in my directorial debut Jayate. He played a professional medical witness. Amazing timing and a super caustic sense of humour. Go well Achyut.”

Actor Jackie Shroff, who shared screen space with Potdar in many films, also treated the netizens with an unseen photo with him and wrote, “This pic with Achyut ji will always by in my heart."

Director Sudhir Mishra added, "Great Actor. Terrific person. Was a regular with Saeed Mirza. Remember seeing him in Albert Pinto Ko Gussa kyon Aata hai. A world and its citizens slowly disappearing."
