Veteran actor Dharmendra died due to age-related ailments on Monday, November 24, 2025, in Mumbai. Amid growing uncertainty around his health and well-being. For the unversed, the actor was admitted to the hospital earlier this month after complaining of breathlessness. Since then, he had been critical state. After being discharged from the hospital, he continued to receive medical treatment at home. He breathed his last earlier on Monday and was laid to rest at the Pawan Hans crematorium in the presence of close friends and family.

No state honours for Dharmendra

According to a recent development, Dharmendra will not be receiving state honours. This is partly surprising given his contributions to Indian cinema. He was active in the cinema since 1960, when he made his debut. He was active till his last breath with his upcoming and last movie scheduled to release in December 2025. Over his career that spans over 6 decades, he has acted in more than 300 films.

Interestingly, the last actor to receive the state funeral was veteran star Manoj Kumar, who was cremated with full state honours in Mumbai on April 5, 2025. His funeral included a three-gun salute and his body draped in the national flag. The tribute recognised his contribution to Indian cinema, particularly his patriotic roles that earned him the nickname Bharat Kumar.

What are state honours and how is it decided?

A state funeral is a ceremonial event organised to honour prominent individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation. These funerals often include elaborate arrangements, such as military honours, a gun salute, and the draping of the coffin or body with the national flag. A state funeral recognises the individual’s achievements as well as the collective mourning of the nation.

The eligibility for receiving a state funeral is decided by a combination of historical precedent, legal guidelines, and discretionary powers exercised by government officials. The decision to bestow a state funeral is taken by the government, by taking into account the individual’s stature and contributions.

The Chief Minister must consult with senior cabinet members and other officials to evaluate the eligibility of the deceased. The decision also reflect public sentiment and the individual’s impact on society.
