Screenwriter Sumit Arora says writing Border 2 felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He recalls watching the 1997 film in the Meerut theatre with his father, who was a big Sunny Deol. Hence, writing the film came from a personal space for him

How often does one get the opportunity to write the sequel of a film that they had watched wide-eyed as a child? When screenwriter Sumit Arora was offered Border 2, the sequel to JP Dutta’s much loved Border (1997), he knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “This was an emotional opportunity for me because we have all seen Border growing up. I have a vivid memory of watching the film in Ajanta Theatre in Meerut,” he recalls.

Driven by nostalgia and love for the original, Arora approached the writing process of Border 2 that stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty. “I asked myself, ‘What did you feel when you first watched it?’ When writing the sequel, I kept that emotion in mind, while also being mindful of today’s sensibilities. When people are watching the second part, they also go back to the emotion of the first film,” he shares. Another factor influenced him as he penned the Anurag Singh-directed war drama — the fact that he was writing for Deol, an actor whom his father admired. “My dad took me to watch Border. He was a Sunny Deol fan. You do films for different reasons, and this definitely is for my dad,” he smiles.
