Los Angeles: Actress Sofia Vergara is producing a sports-themed family drama for US network ABC.

"The Classic" is inspired by the documentary of the same name, which centred on a football rivalry between two Los Angeles high schools. The show will also focus on a multi-generational family.

The series, written by The Good Wife's Todd E Kessler, will be directed by Under The Same Moon's Patricia Riggen, reported Deadline.

"Patricia and Todd have created an incredibly rich and multicultural tapestry, where football is just the connector between communities facing enormous social and economic challenges," Mike Tollin, the co-chairman of Mandalay Sports Media - one of the production companies behind the project - said.

It is unclear when the series will film or if "Modern Family" star Sofia will make an appearance.
