Marvel Studios confirmed Cumberbatch's casting as the Sorcerer Supreme, following months of speculation, reported a leading website.
"Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character," Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios' president, said in a statement.
Cumberbatch, 38, was first reported to be in talks to star in 'Doctor Strange' in summer, but he downplayed those suggestions at Comic-Con International.
The actor more recently shot down speculation about renewed talks for the coveted role in November, after Marvel Studios' negotiations with Joaquin Phoenix allegedly broke down at the final stage.
