Vijay Deverakonda has not had a hit in over 6 years. With Kingdom that hit the screens today, the actor is looking forward to making a much needed comeback at the box office
Vijay Deverakonda
Actor Vijay Deverakonda has been actively promoting his film Kingdom over the past few days. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri of Jersey fame, the film has released in theatres today. In Kingdom, Vijay plays undercover operative Surya, who is on a high-risk mission. The film promises high-octane action along with strong emotional undertones. While the verdict on Kingdom is awaited, here’s a look at how Vijay’s last five films performed at the box office.
The Family Star (2024)
Before Kingdom, Vijay appeared in the full-fledged romantic drama The Family Star. The film was released in theatres in April 2024 and opened to largely negative reviews from critics. It turned out to be a major dud at the box office, collecting a gross of Rs 23.2 crore against a budget of Rs 50 crore. Directed by Parasuram Petla, the film had a decent opening day collection of Rs 5.75 crore. However, it failed to pick up momentum and saw a steady decline after the first day.
Kushi (2023)
In 2023, Vijay teamed up with Samantha Ruth Prabhu for the second time after Mahanati. The film follows the story of two individuals who fall in love, only to realise that their respective fathers are ideological rivals. Kushi had a strong opening with Rs 16 crore on Day 1. Made on a budget of Rs 55 crore, the film went on to gross Rs 77.4 crore worldwide.
Liger (2022)
Released in 2022, Liger was backed by Dharma Productions and directed by Puri Jagannadh. The film was pegged to be a game-changer for Vijay Deverakonda, especially since he had already found fame in Telugu cinema. It also marked his debut in Hindi cinema. However, despite being made on a reported budget of ₹90 crore and being marketed extensively, the film failed to make an impression. The content was widely criticized, and this reflected in its poor box office performance.
World Famous Lover (2020)
Written and directed by Kranthi Madhav, this romantic drama featured Vijay in a dual role, alongside Raashii Khanna, Aishwarya Rajesh, Catherine Tresa, and Izabelle Leite. The film was panned by critics and failed to strike a chord with audiences as well. World Famous Lover grossed ₹9.3 crore on its opening day and ₹16 crore over its first weekend at the worldwide box office.
Dear Comrade (2019)
While Dear Comrade received mixed reviews, it was a film with heart and brought Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna together on screen. Vijay played Bobby, a passionate and volatile man who considers himself a “comrade.” He falls in love with Lilly, played by Rashmika. However, his anger comes in the way of their relationship, and he ends up losing her. Years later, when their paths cross again, Bobby learns of the injustice Lilly has faced and encourages her to fight back for herself.
Dear Comrade collected around Rs 18 crore on its opening day and Rs 30–33 crore over its first weekend. Reportedly, the film grossed Rs 37.33 crore by the end of 2019. Made on a budget of Rs 35 crore, it was eventually deemed a flop at the box office.
