Back in 2023, Mumtaz made an appearance on the popular singing reality show Indian Idol 13 with superstar Dharmendra. The episode made headlines as it marked a rare joint appearance of the duo. In a recent interview, Mumtaz opened up about her experience of appearing on the show, which also marked her first-ever appearance on television.

Mumtaz on her TV appearance

During an interview with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Mumtaz revealed why she stays away from television and what made her come on Indian Idol 13. She revealed that her appearance came with a fee of Rs 18–20 lakh.

Mumtaz said, “Even today, they call me on television. When I went on TV for the first time with Dharam ji and danced with him on the stage, that was the only time I went on television. And till now, they have contacted me over one hundred times, and I told them about my price… They said that people do it in Rs 3-4 lakh, so I told them that I can’t say anything for those people; that’s their wish. They can do it for free also, but this is my price. I have always been like that…. I did only one show, and I took Rs 18-20 lakh for that. They said they can’t pay me, and I haven’t done it; I don’t want to do it. Paisa pheko, tamasha dekho (Throw money, enjoy the show)!”

During the same interaction, she also addressed reports of rejecting the film Seeta Aur Geeta because of low pay. She said, "Not just fees. But yes, that was also one of the reasons. But, Ramesh Sippy sahab was a big producer and director at that time, so he thought I might do it in Rs 2 lakh because he was a big producer. Every big producer has their own ego issues. But thankfully, I was getting so many films already that I didn’t feel this film would do anything special for me. So, things didn’t work out between us. But you see, Hema Malini did it na.” Mumtaz was one of the highest-paid actresses in the 1970s.

Mumtaz pays tribute to Dharmendra

After Dharmendra's death last month, Mumtaz dropped a series of pictures with the late superstar, paying tribute. She shared stills from their film along with a picture featuring Dharmendra, Anju Mahendru, Poonam Sinha, Jackie Shroff, Danny Denzongpa, Talat Aziz, and Mumtaz herself. She wrote, “Dharam ji, you were and you are always with us! May you rest in peace."

Superstar Dharmendra passed away at the age of 89 on November 24. He was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital after reportedly complaining of breathlessness. After being administered the necessary treatment, Dharmendra was discharged on November 12 and moved to his Juhu home, where he continued his recovery.

Dharmendra is survived by his first wife, Prakash Kaur, and their four children, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Ajeeta, and Vijayta, as well as his second wife, Hema Malini, and their daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.
