Every evening over the next three days, the Gyan Sagar Amphitheatre in Borivali will come alive with sounds of ghungroos, harmonium, tabla, flute, saxophone and even the French cornet &mdash; a trumpet-like instrument &mdash; as diverse artistes take the stage for the third edition of Kala Coast Music Festival.

This evening, watch acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer Revathi Srinivasraghavan perform with her students followed by Classical vocalists Devaki Pandit and Raghunandan Panshikar, who will present a session on the mystic poetry of saints.

Tomorrow, French soprano singer Violaine Le Chenadec and cornet performer Adrien Mabire will present a duet on traditional Western music from the 16th and 17th centuries. On Sunday, vocalist Shubha Mudgal will be joined by her husband-tabla player Dr Aneesh Pradhan, and harmonium exponent Sudhir Nayak for an intimate Hindustani Baithak. The festival culminates with harmonium performances by 14-year-old child prodigy Unmesh Khaire and 83-year-old Padma Shri awardee Pandit Tulsidas Borkar.

The brainchild of Nayak, the Kala Coast Music Festival was launched to raise funds for an eponymous global music and arts centre being set up on a five-and-half acre plot in the city of Karje in the Udupi district of Karnataka. It aims to bring together all those engaged in music and allied art forms to practise, present and collaborate on a single platform. "We have already built a permanent stage and 22 studio apartments. We're in the process of building a gurukul, recording studios and a museum-like archive for the arts.

The project should be completed within four years," shares Raghavendra Mallya, event coordinator and one of the founding members of Kala Coast. The centre will also include a mini theatre, meditation centre and a katta. "It's an open sitting area under the shade of a tree found in villages, where every evening, an audience gathers to watch local performances. We will host similar performances at the centre," he adds.

Flautist Ronu Majumdar, who will showcase a Hindustani and Carnatic instrumental jugalbandi with his long-time collaborator and renowned saxophonist Dr Kadri Gopalnath, shares, "The gurukul is a unique idea. I plan to go and teach there on one-on-one basis to pass on our culture to the next generation."
