Come May 4, and 1,50,000 runners across 40 locations worldwide, will race at exactly the same time for the cause of spinal cord injury. They will be running as part of the Wings for Life World Run. In India, the Wings for Life World Run will take place in Sonipat, Haryana. The race will kick off from Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai, Sonipat and is expected to end at Karnal.

In this race, the runners are chased by a catcher car, which marks the end of the race for a runner as it passes him/her. So, the runners do not run towards a finishing line, instead it chases them. The catcher car takes off 30 minutes after the run begins, and once it goes past a runner, his/her race is over and he/she is given the final world rank. As the race progresses, the official catcher cars accelerate, eliminating competitors as they pass them, until there’s a single man and woman left running who are crowned the Global Champions of the Wings for Life World Run. The race will also be held in Auckland, Barcelona, California, Cape Town and Lima.

All proceeds from the run will go to the Wings for Life foundation. Wings for Life, a spinal cord research foundation whose mission is to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, has undertaken this initiative. Dietrich Mateschitz and motocross world champion, Heinz Kinigadner established the non-profit research foundation in 2004.

It supports and finances scientific research and clinical trials aimed at healing the injured spinal cord. 30,00,000 people worldwide are living with a spinal cord injury and every year 1,30,000 more people sustain a spinal cord injury, followed by paralysis.
