Short takes on love and life

This Valentine’s Day, if you log on to the Facebook account or YouTube channel of Terribly Tiny Tales (ttt), you’ll find yourself watching a video where actress Nimrat Kaur debates with her clingy husband on what chai should be made. Titled El’ayichi, this Devashish Makhija directorial is one of the five short films to be showcased as a part of the first edition of Terribly Tiny Talkies. For the uninitiated, ttt is a platform that has been encouraging bite-sized storytelling from a community of followers for the past one-and-a-half years and the Talkies is an extension of this format.

Small is good
Chintan Ruparel, co-founder of Terribly Tiny Tales who has also directed one of the short films, explains, “The idea borrows from the ethos of bite-sized storytelling with content designed keeping in mind the audience’s attention spans, of course, without compromising on characters, production quality etc. Finally, we narrowed it down to a simple format, wherein a bunch of invited writer-directors have interpreted the given word/theme through five-minute films in their own unique manner.”

Keeping in tune with Valentine’s Day, the makers opted for the theme of love and have roped in an eclectic bunch of Gen-Next directors to showcase their work. Apart from Ruparel, the list includes Vasan Bala of Peddlers fame, Adhiraj Bose, who has worked with the likes of Vishal Bhardwaj, Shlok Sharma (recommended by Vikramaditya Motwane) and Makhija who made his directorial debut with Oonga.

“These are our friends and also admirers of ttt. Each film celebrates the director’s unique interpretation, and we think this separates it from the rest of the video content currently available on the social web. In a space dominated by lowest common denominator videos that are ‘designed’ to go viral, we’ve gone the other way by staying true to storytelling fundamentals,” elaborates Ruparel, adding that the Talkies would be an ongoing initiative.

On: Exclusive previews on February: 11
(5 pm to 6 pm at Matterden CFC, Lower Parel) and February 13 (National College, Bandra)
