Many Rock bands in the '90s were formed with the aim of featuring in glitzy music videos that built models' careers. Today, TV may have been dethroned by the web, yet a few groups continue to make melodious original music with simple lyrics. The Yellow Diary, a Hindi/Punjabi Rock band, is one such example. They became a sensation after Raghu Dixit recommended their music to Vishal Dadlani, and the latter tweeted it.

The Yellow Diary opened its pages two years ago when vocalist Rajan Batra reached out to keyboardist/music producer Himonshu Parikh to arrange a song. "He had written Marz (one of their popular tunes) and wanted someone to produce it. After one song, he felt he worked well together. We soon formed a band with a few other members," recalls Parikh, who left a day job to pursue music. "I was an engineer," interrupts Vaibhav Pani, the band's guitarist.

"When Vaibhav quit, he was at a brilliant post too," laughs Parikh.

However, gigs aren't their only sustenance. They also produce tracks for other musicians. "Eventually, it comes down to making music and the best part is that we don't have to fight the Monday blues anymore. The joy of making music whenever you feel like gives you a different kind of high."

One can expect all their signature originals at the upcoming gig. Most of their songs have a people connect. "They are based on stories that everyone experiences in life. Marz is about a boy in college who is constantly linked to a girl. And although he knows he is falling for her, he's conflicted since he does not believe in love," explains Pani.

One of the band's masterpieces is the track Bawri Chhori, which is about a lesbian trying to come out to her parents. "She is telling her parents that they won't understand her orientation, and call her a bawri (mad)," he adds. Sada, a quintessential love song, is yet another must-hear.

Coming to the name of the band, its members believe that yellow is a mysterious colour, and they wanted their songs to be like a diary that holds unique stories. This led them to joining the two words. "Like one would write a personal diary, our songs are those intimate stories," they add.
