Today every Indian mourns the death of Lata Mangeshkar, the Nightingale of India, who gave melody a new meaning, singing a tune that continues to stay with every listener since the past eight decades.

As Bollywood and film and music industries pay their tributes to the legendary singer, Chennai-based Carnatic vocalist, speaking to mid-day.com, poetically said, “Movie sequences, storylines, actors and songs create memories. The playback singer is the deliverer of the song memory. Rarely do singers themselves become the impression, their every modulation and expression a part of our life story. And to be able to give Indians cutting across society a tune to hum, a verse to sing to and for themselves, music that makes their being, was special. Lata ji was every listener's singer, the melody in every romance, the dirge when a partner passed away, the uniter of the land, and remains our companion.”
