Grey may seem like a muted colour, however in the tapestry of Navratri colours, it represents balanced emotions. It symbolises the destruction of evil and emphasises the importance of being grounded. Wearing grey on the Day 6 of Navratri promotes balance, peace and is auspicious for prosperity.

The colour grey is worn on Day 6 of Navratri in honor of Maa Katyayani. She is also known as the warrior goddess. She is the fierce form of Durga, created by the combined energies of the divine trinity; Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma, to defeat the demon Mahishasura. She is considered the strongest manifestation of Goddess Durga. It is said that she was born to Sage Katyayan, after an intense penance to have her as his daughter, which is also how her name is derived.

Maa Katyayani is depicted with eight arms, holding sacred weapons (such as a sword), a lotus and riding a lion. She is said to rule the planet Jupiter, and so devotees with weaker Jupiter in their birthchart are asked to worship her, seek her blessings. Devotees can offer Maa Katyayani Shringar items and vermillion to seek her blessings. Maa Katyani is said to be the destroyer of evil, and a symbol of fierce devotion.

Grey is also a tricky colour to style. It is a colour often paired with the colour black. However during any vibrant festival such as Navratri, black is avoided and considered inauspicious. So for devotees who want to follow the scheme of colours dedicated to each day during Navratri can pair grey with softer colours like white, pink, teal blue, and muted yellow.

Navratri 2025 is being celebrated across India since September 22. On the fifth day of Navratri, devotees honored Maa Skandamata, adorning themselves in the vibrant hue of green. As the festival moves forward, tomorrow marks the auspicious Saptami of Shardiya Navratri, when worshippers will revere Maa Kaalratri and embrace the color orange, symbolizing energy and courage.
