Working hard day and night at his studio in Delhi, artist Vijay Sharma has prepared a set of 17 paintings for his upcoming exhibition, Vitamin J which is curated by Alakananda Saha. This time, he has attempted a series of self-portraits -- a depiction of Sharma's innermost thoughts and dreams. What does the name Vitamin J stand for? The artist says: "Everyone requires vitamin which can be consumed through different mediums like sunlight, food, medicine etc. But what the soul needs is happiness."

Mini him

Born in Jaipur, the 31-year-old artist's paintings are inspired by Rajasthani miniature paintings. They have a universal appeal and are noted for their representation of true Indian spirit, with a lyrical quality that enamours the mind and the soul. "Rajasthan is famous for its miniature art work, so coming from there, it was always in my mind. I have given it a new dimension and a contemporary look," says Sharma who has taken up painting from 2008. "I paint things that attract me and is a part of my everyday life or things that I have always dreamt of. Like I was always interested in photography. So I have painted a camera and likewise I dream of owning a big car so I have portrayed that in my work," he adds on his works at the exhibition that commences today.

Stress Reliever

God sized
Using acrylic on canvas, Sharma's main subject is bigger in size, with his own miniature figures to present the subject's importance. "One special feature that drew my attention in Rajasthani artworks, was the depiction of the protagonist and like God or King which are in bigger size as compared to normal public. In my paintings, too, I have painted the main subject much bigger in size, with miniature figures to present the subject's importance in my life," he says. So what is next for the artist? "I am working on a completely different theme -- monuments like Taj Mahal -- for my next set of work. And I enjoy my work a lot, so when people see my work, I'd like them to enjoy it too."
