All Adman Sanjiv Shah wants is that you attend the one-of-its-kind Silent Olympiad and prove that you care about the world, by doing more than attending candle vigils
Expect something out of the box from Sanjiv Shah, a man who is "almost 400 films-old" in the advertising industry, when he decides to get you involved in a sporting event for the hearing impaired. Why would you care for the hearing impaired? That's exactly what his video highlights. So what if he resorts to using expletives to get your attention. Shah is a member of Round Table India, an organisation that's been organising the Silent Olympiad, a sports meet for the hearing impaired, for the last 32 years. While they've kept the event low-key for so over three decades, they are now keen on sensitising more Indians on issues the hearing impaired face.u00a0
What is the Silent Olympiad?
It's a sports meet involving 800 kids from all over India. There are almost 5 lakh hearing impaired in the country, and hardly anything is being done for them because they don't come across as being obviously handicapped. Barely five per cent of the hearing impaired get medical aid, and that includes hearing aids. The event hopes to draw attention to these concerns.
The event has existed for years, but it's hardly been publicised.
As an organisation, Round Table has been publicity shy. We are happy doing what we do on a level we can manage. But this year, we have grudgingly accepted to publicise the event because we want to get the younger generation involved in helping the hearing impaired.u00a0
Why does the publicity material border on sarcasm, even quite offensive?
It is deliberately offensive. The campaign is drafted to grab the attention of teenyboppers. I find that my 21 year-old son's connect with social issues is next to zilch when compared to what it was for me when I was his age. We don't want their money. Weu00a0 want them to come and be part of the event. Once you are there, it's unlikely that you won't be moved into action. If you continue to remain indifferent, the devil is your witness!
On: February 6, from 8 am to 7 pm at University Stadium, Marine Lines
