You won't miss out, if you do pass on this coffee place in Bandra that offers Thai green curry that's yellow and berry iced tea if you ask for peach. They will have to try harder

There was a time and place when coffee shops were hallowed spaces. They were places of inspiration for writers and poets; places where great minds gathered to discuss ideas; it was where one went to feel less alone. That time has passed, and most certainly if you drop by at Lancy's Java Joy.

It might help to define what your expectation from a coffee shop is if you do decide to pay a visit. Are you there for the food? The ambience? The company? The service? At Lancy's, the food is reasonable: both in terms of taste and price. For company, you will have to bring your own. The ambience and service? Well, it's a good idea to lower your expectations.

We walked inside on a soggy night to make our acquaintance with a snack counter that advertised frozen French fries and shriveled sandwiches. Courage in short supply, we requested for the menu, which lists sandwiches, burgers, shakes, and the odd curry.

Colour me bad
We ordered the Thai Green Vegetable Curry with Rice (Rs 125), the Peach Iced Tea (Rs 65), and the Fiorella (Rs 160) and Coffee Shake (Rs 75) to go.

If the curry sticks out as an unusual choice to opt for at a coffee shop, blame it on the snack counter. Think advertisement for food. Errr, we'll pass, thanks.

Most of the food is sourced from their central kitchen, so only assembly and/ or heating or deep-frying is required before service.

Our order took longer than one might anticipate a curry popped into a microwave to take, which we were later informed was because the rice is among the few items that is prepared there.

When the green curry does arrive, the first thing we notice is that it's not green. Where's the basil and the coriander, boys? It's still reasonably good, despite the streaks of white that typically indicate that the cream (in this case, coconut cream) or milk used in a gravy has split. Bless our brave hearts! The Iced tea finally arrives. We are served the Berry instead of the Peach, but post the curry revelation, our standards have been suitably lowered. And we don't notice the error until the time to pay our bill.

The Fiorella is a thin-crust pizza topped with onions, corn, peppers, and basil. Now you know why the green curry was yellow.

Lancy's Java Joy, Java Green in its previous avatar, is sadly just another coffee shop minus personality. The management informed us that they plan to soon introduce wine on the menu. Might help dull the senses.

Lancy's Java Joy didn't know we were there. The GUIDE reviews anonymously and pays for meals.
