If you are strapped for time but wish to learn new languages, check out LingosMio, an online platform to learn new languages. At present, it offers courses in Spanish, English, Hindi and Mandarin Chinese.

Explaining the uniqueness of their courses, Bhopal-based Alok Arora, founder and CEO, LingosMio, says, “Languages are a thought process and it’s important to understand that thought process, to be fluent in the language. People try to memorise, which is the reason most people give up on learning languages quickly. When you learnt Mathematics, did you memorise the result of each and every multiplication or did you learn how multiplication was done?”

He suggests that likewise, we need to understand the root of each word and learn how to use the words to make sentences on our own.
Arora adds that most learners have a problem taking part in a conversation. So, LingosMio emphasises on conversational skills and actual use of language. “The courses focus on speaking and listening skills and interactive exercises. Moreover, we have used voices recorded by native voice artistes, which helps students understand the accent better,” he states.
Another principle followed here is to wrap up the content into a conversation: “This ensures that the student knows how to use whatever they have learnt in a conversation.”

After signing up, students can access courses in their own time. They can also mail queries, and meet other learners. The courses can be accessed on the mobile phone (only Spanish courses are available). The panel that creates the content includes linguists, speakers and a focus group of students globally. The courses are self-paced, but students can learn a chapter a day, which will take up to three months.
