For the occasion of International Dance Day, Sandip Soparrkar and Iratxe Pazos are conducting a Flamenco workshop for Puneites
Dance guru Sandip Soparrkar will not be in the country for International Dance Day which falls on April 29, so he decided to put together a dance workshop a little before that. In collaboration with Flamenco expert Iratxe Pazos, he has organised a Flamenco workshop on April 24.
"Pune is my city so I'd love to do this for Puneites," says Soparrkar. Flamenco is a Spanish dance form which is slowly becoming very popular in India. "I called my friendu00a0 from Spain,u00a0 Iratxe Pazos who is an expert in this form of dance to help me with the workshop," he adds.
The last time Soparrkar was in Pune for a Flamenco workshop, he realised that many participants had no clue about the dance form. "People have wrong notions about Flamenco. Some think it is a dance only for girls, some others think it is an aggressive dance. In reality it is a dance for both boys and girls," he says.
According to Soparrkar, Flamenco originated in India and has its roots in Kathak. "If you look at the footwork in Flamenco, you will realise that it is very similar to that of Kathak," he points out. "In the earlier days, gypsies moved from India to Europe. They changed countries and also exchanged music and dances," he adds.

Soparrkar is looking forward to the workshop and he says he has already got a lot of registrations for it. The workshop is open to everyone -- kids and adults. "For picking up a dance style, the initial training is important. After that, you can do whatever you want," he says.
Meanwhile, he is very excited about performing at the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. "I am eagerly looking forward to it. Manish Malholtra is designing our clothes. We will perform four dances from different Hindi films," he says.
