“The organiser told me, ‘look buddy, nobody knows you.’ Ok. (chuckle) People will know me now”, announces Buji Lord, one of the five legendary musicians who were a part of orchestras in the Hindi film music industry in the documentary, The Human Factor. Directed by Rudradeep Bhattacharjee, this FTII graduate found inspiration while perusing the book, Behind the Curtain: Making Music in Mumbai’s Film Studios by Gregory Booth.

Bhattacharjee eulogises the Lords’ family triad that includes Cawas Lord and his sons — Buji and Kersi Lord. Natty and upbeat, the documentary’s first city screening was slated to be at Matunga. “All the musicians including the Lords were present (except Cawas Lord who passed away last year). There was a power cut in the middle which led to the event’s cancellation but the 200 people enjoyed as much as they saw of the film,” he recounts.

The film was well received at the New York Indian Film Festival, Indian Film Festival Stuttgart and International Documentary & Short Film Festival of Kerala. Chandni Parekh, co-founder of Vikalp@Prithvi shares, “Rudradeep approached us some months ago. His film was about Hindi film musicians — most of whom are unknown to audiences and decided to screen it.” A Q&A session with the director will take place after the film.
