Alice's Wonderland turns Quixotic
What could the young girl from the 1865 novel by Lewis Carroll have in common with Miguel de Cervantes' 17th century hero? "Dreams," answers Ranga Theatre's Bijon Mondal, matter-of-factly. "We want children to dream good, positive dreams and be aware that what they dream of today will eventually become a reality," he explains. Bijon is the director of the play Wonderland, which explores what happens when Don Quixote decides to drop by Alice's Wonderland.

Bijon, who has conceptualised and designed the play, was initially toying around with the idea of recreating Alice In Wonderland on stage. But with Tim Burton's film version releasing last year, he had to spend some time re-thinking the decision. "I was looking at ways to approach the story from a different angle. At the same time, I was reading Don Quixote and that's when it struck me that if I introduced Don to Wonderland, it could result in something interesting," he adds, while speaking of this unique experiment.
The play is also Bijon's way of redeeming the idealist Quixote who only dreams of chivalrous achievements but does not taste success in Cervantes' work. By teaming up with Alice, the Spanish knight gets a chance to vanquish the evil Red Queen and save Wonderland. But does Don Quixote finally find success? Find out at tonight's show.
