Sitar player Anoushka Shankar returns to Mumbai for a musical soiree after two years, and will share a confluence of Indian and Western notes as a tribute to her father, late Pandit Ravi Shankar
A year after her illustrious father’s death, sitarist Anoushka Shankar is back in India to lend a musical tribute to Pandit Ravi Shankar with a two-city tour, starting in Mumbai on December 12 and then travelling to Delhi on December 14.

The prodigious musician, who followed her maestro father’s footsteps in the field of music and yet, managed to create a niche by adding her personal touch to her music, is ready to mesmerise Mumbaiites with music from her just-released album, Traces Of You.

Trace the sound
“I’m here to present my new music to the people, which I hope they enjoy. My new album, Traces of You, contains songs based around Indian Classical music, sophisticated Pop formats, and strong instrumental performances, and translates beautifully live with the help of my amazing new band. I’ve brought incredible musicians with me and I’m really excited to perform this new music in India,” says Shankar, who will be performing with a mix of Indian and European musicians on this tour. On the Indian side are her father’s disciple Sanjeev Shankar on shehnai and London-based Pirashanna Thevarajah on Carnatic instruments like mridangam, kanjira, ghatam and moorsing.
Norah and I
While her half-sister, Norah Jones has contributed extensively to this album, Shankar informs that she will not be a part of this tour. “Norah played a key part on the album as the only singer, and featured prominently on three songs, including the title track, Traces of You,” apprises Shankar, sharing that during the concerts, these songs will be performed by Ayanna Witter-Johnson, who will sing, play the piano as well as the cello in the show.
Although, the 32-year-old has toured all around the world, she still considers performing in India as most special as that “is where my music comes from and also where I come from,” revealing an emotional chord, she further stresses, “I am excited to be coming to India. It’s going to be a memorable trip as this is my first visit to India after Zubin was born.”
As far as her plans for the next year are concerned, Shankar already has everything charted out for her. She will be curating afestival in London at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, will continue to tour Traces of You worldwide, and hopes to start work ona new album as well.
