The Curry House at Versova is a delicious takeaway option, if you're willing to overlook the butter and ghee overkill that accompanies most of its preparations

It seems as if take-away eateries are hell-bent on stealing the spicy thunder from their fancier, fine-dining counterparts. The Curry House has based their philosophy on delivering good food and concentrating solely on the culinary offerings, than paying attention to ambience and seating. They also believe that a focused menu sans a number of limitless dishes is the way to go.

Kheema Kaleji

The Curry House is an old-school food joint that delivers tikkas, mutton gravies and an assortment of rotis and naans, which compliment the dishes on offer. We began proceedings with the Chicken Tikka (Rs 140) that came served in delightfully large chunks. The chicken was perfectly marinated in spices and grilled to the ideal brown without losing its smooth, unctuous marinade. This is one of Curry House's most popular dishes. If this Chicken Tikka was made into Chicken Tikka Masala, it would make for a winner of a gravy dish. Nonetheless, this was the perfect appetiser to begin the evening.

The Chicken Korma (Rs 160) was a delicious blend of fresh, tangy yoghurt, cream, nut and seed pastes -- a flavour-filled curry. The aroma and spicing of the korma made sure that it didn't overpower the meat juices -- the result was a tangy m ufffdlange of flavours. The korma was mildly spiced and was clearly the piece-de-resistance dish at The Curry House.

The Dal Makhani (Rs 120) was a delight too. Makhani is the Hindi word for "buttery", and to put it mildly, this dish lived up to its name. Cooked in its original signature style, the dal delivered the rich creamy texture that we expected it to have. The good news -- it is served with a walloping of cream.

Finally, the Kheema Kaleji (Rs 160) tempted us. Being a huge fan of Awadhi cuisine, one was curious to see how it stacked up. The Kheema Kaleji was prepared from kheema (mutton) liver and cooked with onions and Indian spices and garnished with desi ghee. While the dish sounds like a shortcut to a heart attack, it was authentic and succulent to the last helping.

Butter Naan accompanied the dishes and was delicious enough, to be eaten separately. There were also three complimentary Gulab Jamuns served, which were sweet, soft and juicy. Divine. The downer for The Curry House is that it's a takeaway. Also, health-conscious folk might shy away from its rich, heavy and calorie-filled preparations.
