Fashion is something that gives you a place for self expression along with the changing times. It is a term that changes meaning almost everyday. Nowadays, it is more about following the trend than one's comfort. The word style can't be restricted to some particular style. It goes for hairstyles, accessories, clothes and now tattoos.

Bare your pearlies
Over the past few years, body tattoos have gained huge momentum with almost everyone wanting to get inked. The latest to join the bandwagon are dental tattoos. Though costlier than skin tattoos, it is fast becoming a rage among youngsters in Delhi. The fashion trend has 14-35 years old as its ardent fans. "Generally people opt for it to enhance their looks. This is done so that they become the centre of attraction among a bunch of commoners," says Dr Sonia Sharma, a consultant with Apollo Dental Centre, East of Kailash.

Understand and PROCEED
One goes for tooth tattoos so that they get a break from their boring regular white teeth. In India, even when such tattoos were not popular, individuals used to have a gold tooth as a symbol of their status. For some, it is used to portray their personality, some to indicate their character through their teeth and for some it can also be means to signify their love.

But the industry seems to be divided when it comes to the idea of tattooing their teeth. Dr Sonia Sharma says: "Yes, people are inclined towards it, generally the funkier generation, but it is still in the process of climbing popularity charts as there are not many labs in India that are well-equipped for making dental tattoos right now."

Also, these are of various types, like stick-ons, permanent or semi-permanent tattoos. People like it because it boosts their smile. But it is likely to increase the level of hygiene awareness also since you'll have to go to a
dental expert to get one.

Though a lot of people are going for it, there are still others who are hesitant when it comes to getting tattooed on their teeth. This is because these can have some side effects as well if one does not go the right way about it. "It is advisable only for those who have artificial caps since these tattoos can not be made on natural tooth. On the other hand, those who do not have caps should not get capping done just for getting tattooed," says Dr Anil Chandna, Vice-Chairman, Delhi Dental Council.

PROCEED, grin and bare
When a dental tattoo is embedded on a natural tooth, it causes dental caries, or in simple language, daanto mei keedha lag jata hai. The chemicals used in permanent tooth tattoos are also harmful for the teeth. "We provide these tattoos to all who come to us but only after telling them about the cost, side effects and if they agree we give them the tattoo," explains Dr Chandna.

Dental tattoos can make one stand out in a crowd of people and a lot of the younger
generation is opting for it. If you can take care of your teeth and wish to have a beautiful smile then dental tattoos are the right option for you. But like we always say ufffd keep the safety catch on.
