"I believe that you should stay away from what you don't know," debut writer and advertising professional Swapan Seth's words draw applause from the other side for his no-holds-barred frankness. He is referring to the refreshing design that separates his book, This Is All I Have To Say, from just another wisdom-infused title to a surprisingly simplistic, lyrical guide of life tools, for kids across India.
From selling videotapes and computer peripherals as a 17 year-old college dropout to becoming India's youngest creative director at 24, Swapan, who is also the brother of media personality, Suhel Seth, has seen it all. So, when the time came, the 44 year-old Swapan felt the need to pen life's lessons into a book.
Simple, prosaic-free verse lace this book that includes thoughts, feelings and wisdom about love, passion, failure, parenthood, leadership, ambition, and other important life tools, meant for his 13 and 12 year-old sons -- Reyhaan and Sirhaan.
"If you have kids who are approaching their teens, it's difficult to veer them from Pitbull andu00a0 PlayStation. I wanted them to know about matters of the heart, mind and soul, about family and relationships. The book, I felt could be a medium of transferring my life's lessons to them," explains Swapan about how the idea behind this book emerged.
It was early 2011 when it came into fruition -- "I wanted it to be a gift for my 13 year-old son. It was never pre-determined. The gift came a bit late, though... Besides, I never edited a word of what's inside," Swapan admits about how the book took a life of its own, quickly adding that he believed he could've done far better, when he revisited the final copy.
"To quote my son's words after he read it -- 'It's way too sentimental,'" Swapan discloses on his son's reaction to this labour of love. Was he disappointed that the book didn't drive home the desired advantage? "Not at all.
It's meant for children. It might make for heavy-duty reading in parts, nearly prosaic yet, there's plenty for kids to take home plenty," he assures us, adding that chapters from the book are already being shared with school kids in a few of Delhi's schools.
