Mahabaleshwar
Average temperature in January: 17 degrees C

Founded in 1826 by Sir John Malcolm, Mahabaleshwar was the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency.

Located at 1,372m above sea level, this hill station offers more to the tourist looking for variety, while on a mini-weekend break.

From strawberry-picking along fields that dot the stretch to Panchgani (19 km away) to chappal-shopping, you will get more bang for your buck.

Cycling is an eco-friendly way to move around this hill town. Check into one of its homestays run by the locals to enjoy a secluded, restful flavour. Don't Miss: Venna Lake, One-tree Hill, Panorama Point, Arthur's Seat.

Khandala

Average temperature in January: 20 degrees C

Khandala didn't need Aamir Khan to bring it back to public memory. Situated at 625m above sea level, it, along with its more frenetic twin retreat Lonavla remains the quickest option for a pleasant weekend break, especially in December-January.

It's about 104 km by road from Mumbai and despite a constant influx, there's an inexplicable familiarity that Mumbaikars have with this idyllic hill station that stands on the western slopes of the Sahyadris.

Whether it's the small town-like vibe, viewing points situated close to each other or the numerous cottages and resorts to fit every budget and whim, Khandala has its charm.

Don't miss: Rajmachi Point, Duke's Nose or Nagphani (Snake's hood) that's an 800 feet monolith.

Matheran
Average temperature in January: 21 degrees C

Hugh Malet's discovery continues to enchant tourists for its old-world charm and proximity to Mumbai (100 km).

The adventure begins from the time you hop on to the vintage toy train, functional since 1907 (except when it was wiped out in the July 2005 floods); it winds its way to the top in about 2 u00bd hours, covering 21 kms from Neral.

Situated at 803m above sea level, it is probably India's tiniest hill station, developed by the British in 1880 as their summer retreat.

Bungalows, hand rickshaws and ponies ensure there's a slice of quaintness; of course, this depends on if you can outsmart the weekend rush.

Low on pollution, it's a pleasant stay between October and February. Don't miss: Charlotte Lake and Sunset Point, from where Prabalgad can be spotted.
