What exactly is Microsoft's point?

The company has released some ads in the US that say that Windows is cheaper than the Mac. Yeah, right, like we never guessed

One of the nice things about the IT industry are what old hackers will call 'flaming wars' which involve two users fighting it out about whose systems are better. This can happen only with IT you will never find the owners of a Jaguar and a Lamborghini fighting it out the way a DOS and Unix user, or a Mac or a Windows user will fight seemingly to the death about the superiority of his own system.

Among such users, UNIX users and Mac users stand apart from the rest of us poor Windows users. Unix users sneer at us because we have no idea what a '$' or a '#' prompt is, while Mac users think that our idea of graphics is something that can be written on the back of a postage stamp with space left over for an encyclopaedia.

Where Windows wins

The UNIX and the Mac users have their own points, but there is one place where Windows wins it gives you an economically priced PC that performs most tasks for most people and is fairly easy to use, and this is why this is most popular. UNIX users can have their dollar and hash prompts and Mac users their superior eye-candy interfaces Windows users can feel smug about the fact that their PCs are easier than UNIX terminals and cheaper than Macs.

I know that you are getting irritated with me because I'm telling you things that have been true for over a decade, but patience, gentle reader. My point here is a new ad from Microsoft that depicts a person walking into an Apple Store, finding only one sub-$1,000 Apple laptop with a 13" screen, and then deciding to invest in a 17" Windows laptop for under $1,000.

What's the point?

The fact that a Windows PC is cheaper than a Mac is known to everybody who has ever compared prices of these two products in fact, many are those who have gone in for a PC in lieu of a Mac because of the price difference. This ad is a bit like a shoe company saying 'wear our shoes and ensure that no nails prick your feet'.

Duh!

What exactly is Microsoft trying to convey with its advertisement? Does anybody at the company know?

QUICK TAKE
>>Microsoft's new ad says that Windows PCs are cheaper than Macs
>>But there is nothing new in this fact
>>The ad seems to have no message at all
