This search engine claimed to have the largest index in the world, but it doesn't figure as a big player in the search engine space
When I visited cuil.com, it said that I could use this search engine to search for 124,426,951,803 web pages.
One would assume that this would make it a highly visited search engine, but according to comScore, as of March 2009, Google (63.7 per cent), Yahoo (20.5 per cent), Microsoft (8.3 per cent), Ask (3.8 per cent) and AOL (3.7 per cent) are the major players in the search market.
This search ranking is a part of the monthly comScore qSearch analysis of the US search marketplace. As per comScore, in March 2009, Americans conducted 14.3 billion core searches, a 9-percent gain versus February.
Crowded market
As we can see, search is booming, but insofar as search engines go, a few players have a stranglehold on the marketplace. In fact, top player Google and Yahoo cover over 80 per cent of the market between them. Even Microsoft, a tiger in the operating system market, is not even in the kitten class here.
And this makes us ask the question if Microsoft can't take on Google and Yahoo, then can Cuil do it?
What's the question?
This is pertinent today because there is this belief both in the industry as well as in the minds of many users that a combination of Microsoft and Yahoo can beat Google. This is doubtful if we look at the latest data Google's 63.7 per cent market share is still greater than Microsoft's and Yahoo's (28.8 per cent) combined.
Cuil, incidentally, is managed by former Google employees Anna Patterson and Russell Power. So, we can also ask one more question if employees cannot leave Google and create a Google killer, can this be done from the outside? Of course, questions like this don't always have an easy answer.
