6 point plan: For a recession proof holiday

Let's face it. We are in the middle of an economic crunch, worldwide. Markets are falling, stocks are crashing and the dream luxury holiday seems like a distant reality. Fret not for THE TRIP doesn't want to see you sulk over what seems like a global conspiracy. With these tips, you will find yourself on that holiday, sooner than you can say, "Show me the money!"

Plan: Always check about the rules of the religious site that you are visiting. It's best to dress modestly. Many places require you to cover your heads; women need to wear something that goes below their knees, some temple sites in South India require men to not wear shirts at all!

Prioritise: So you are a travel freak. Never mind if you can't take off on longer, exotic holidays due to the cost factor. Instead, plan for frequent long weekend escapes every three months that don't threaten to burn a hole in your pocket.

Budget: Browse through a cross-section of travel websites, read up on hotel posts by local as well as international tourists; if you don't mind the not-so-friendly weather at the time, you might want to opt for off-season breaks. Thus you avoid crowds and save on your stay.

Accessories: If you're planning an adventure holiday (water sports, trekking, skydiving) you might want to check out rental options for the gear required while attempting these activities. So apart from basic essentials including footwear and clothing, the rest can be rented, knocking off a huge amount from your budget.

Overseas flights: For long distances, choose an airline that offers you minimum transit time or direct flight options. You save on time and don't end up coughing up extra expenses while killing time at the airport. Worse, if you have an overnight transit, you might have to shell out costs to explore that city, adding to your budget.

Medication: Carry as much of your personalised medication as possible. Buying these abroad might work up to unnecessary costs. Always take a health insurance policy.
