Framed! Maximum city on canvas

16 artists create mini snapshots of Mumbai for an exhibition Titled Mumbai Meri Jaan, which is a refreshing take on some of the city's popular sights and sounds

Mumbai might be a study in contrasts, however, it is also a city under constant threat of homogenisation. In an attempt to drive home the point, 16 artists have come together to showcase Mumbai's unnoticed beauty through an art exhibition. Using varied mediums including mixed media on paper, acrylic on canvas, calligraphy, watercolours, graphite on paper, the artworks are a collage of monuments, streets, chawls, shrines and other landmarks.

"These paintings are an expression of our love for the city," says artist Daniel David Talegaonkar. His ink on paper artwork is titled Subhadra Chawl, Dadar and depicts the beauty and simplicity of life in a chawl. "I grew up in a chawl in Chembur and have fond memories of the easy camaraderie. History is being lost as these chawls are getting demolished."

Other artworks include a watercolour painting of Banganga. "Banganga is surreal especially in the context of today's Mumbai. Amidst a modern coastal city, it boasts of a fresh water reservoir and old world temples on four sides of the tank," adds artist Shrikant Kashelkar explaining his fascination for the topic.
