Three of the most unmissable spring fests

While we will welcome spring in India with heaps of colour and chants of 'Holi hai!', people across the globe have their own ways to celebrate this change of season -- be it picnicking in gorgeous cherry blossom groves or reveling in the light of the midnight sun

Takayama Spring Festival, Japan
At a time of sorrow and distress, it's important to remember the little things in life that add joy and hope. For the Japanese who are currently combating one of the biggest disasters in modern history, relief and joy will hopefully come in the form of the Takayama Spring Festival, celebrated on April 14 and 15 (the autumn version falls on October 9 and 10).

Takayama Spring Festival, Japan

While the image of Japan brings visions of a modern, industrialised and may be even a robotic city, Takayama breaks the perception by being a city in the mountainous Hida region that has retained its traditional landscape. The Spring Festival, held to pray for a good harvest, is centered on the Hie Shrine in the southern half of Takayama's old town. Visit the gorgeous city and you will encounter massive, ornate yatai (floats) that roam around the city after sunset. Representing the skilled craftsmanship are also puppets made of wood, silk and brocade or embroidered cloth, as well as karakuri dolls (marionettes).

White Nights Festival, Russia
When the sun never sets, it's time for the Russians to get out their vodka and party figuratively, till sunrise. The White Nights Festival held at a time when visitors flock St Petersburg to watch the midnight sun, is a celebration of the country's arts. Several venues come alive during this festival that runs from May to July, with performances and events that include ballet, opera, musical gigs and carnivals but what's that one event you just can't miss? The Scarlet Sails celebration, held in observance of the schools' year-end that sees a stunning display of fireworks.u00a0

National Cherry Blossom Festival, USA
In spring, the state of Washington is transformed into a pink paradise, where thousands of Japanese cherry trees bloom. Donated by the Japanese, the cherry blossoms have grown to stand for the friendship between the two giants, but we shall overlook the political implications of the gift and focus on the three spectacular weekends of festivities it comes with, mostly free and open to all. This year, the celebrations continue till April, and include a parade with giant helium balloons, marching bands and other entertainment, an art show, musical performances, tours through the splendid gardens in Fairfax County, high teas aboard fancy yachts, evening walks guided by the light of festive lanterns, walking tours and other fun stuff.
