The romance attached to the rainisn't confined to the humans. As the first showers soak up the parched earth, thousands of fireflies emerge from their hiding, "flashing" their lights and calling out to their mates.
The romance attached to the rainisn't confined to the humans. As the first showers soak up the parched earth, thousands of fireflies emerge from their hiding, "flashing" their lights and calling out to their mates.
Male fireflies have an in-built antenna that helps them flash in synchrony, and when a female twinkles back, the courtship ritual is complete after which mating takes place.
The orange, red or yellow twinkling also serves as a signal to the villagers that the punishing summer heat is in its last leg, and that monsoons isn't far away.
Since fireflies stop glowing when it rains heavily, this might be your last weekend to witness this magical spectacle.
Lie down in a grassy meadow and watch thousands of fairy lights dance around you. We suggest you keep the camera and torches away savour these moments in your mind instead.
Grassroutes is organising a trip to Purushwadi (250 km from Mumbai and Pune nearest station is Igatpuri, 80-90 kms away) where besides witnessing the fireflies dance, you can enjoy a village stay, sleep under the stars, plough fields, swim in rivers, trek and participate in other nature-driven activities.
