Mumbai boasts of one of the highest real estate prices in the world. Yet, those who build the glass towers live in their shadows without basic necessities.

Established in 1972, Mumbai Mobile Creches (MMC) has been working towards uplifting this community of migrant workers from the lower ebb by running mobile creches and comprehensive daycare programmes for their children who are a day old to teenagers.

For over four decades, MMC has reached over one lakh children across 270 construction sites across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. “Many construction sites are located in areas where development is just being initiated and therefore have little to offer in terms of drinking water, sanitation and healthcare facilities. Common issues among the children include malnutrition, micronutrient deficiency, respiratory infections and skin infections,” says Vrishali Pispati, chief executive, MMC. And to start a dialogue with the general public, MMC organised a health awareness exhibition last year, the second edition of which starts today. Some of the topics that will be covered include environment, hygiene and sanitation, benefits of community participation, nutrition, immunisation, and the difficulties faced by pregnant women.

“This exhibition will shed light on the vulnerability and health issues migrant communities and their children face by using a culturally relevant method. We have art installations made by the children and their teachers, and folk art forms of Warli and Madhubani, as several migrants hail from rural Maharashtra and Bihar,” says Pispati. These artworks will also highlight how the workers’ lives changed after intervention. Other interactive methods include re-interpreted traditional board games revolving around the theme of health.
MMC has also collected recipes from women from the community, which highlight local ingredients and traditional dishes from various states they hail from. These recipes will be showcased at the exhibition.
