Micro bobs have returned to offer respite from a summer of sameness and overheated necks. Here’s how you can sport your bob with flair

CHIC, statement-making and yet timeless — the micro-bob is the cooler, edgier and more avant-garde sibling of the classic bob and has been winning over new legions of fans this year. “While the bob has always been a classic, the micro-bob is more contemporary and emanates a cool girl air because of its graphic lines and its relatively shorter length that can go anywhere between the cheekbone to just below the ears,” shares Bony Sasidharan, artistic and education ambassador, L’Oréal Professionnel.

The hairstyle was born in the late 1960s, when Vidal Sassoon reimagined the mod bob with architectural lines and sharp precision. Supermodels, including Linda Evangelista revived the iconic hairdo in the ’90s, while the Y2K version of this cut was famously sported by Cameron Diaz. The haircut has always served as a palate cleanser when fashion becomes too uniform and safe, running the risk of being too boring, Sasidharan observes. Whether in the ’60s, ’90s or the noughties, the style emerged as a way of celebrating low maintenance, individuality and a less fussy approach to style. If you’ve been contemplating a big micro chop, here are some factors to keep in mind:

Take your pick
A micro bob can be layered, textured, worn with a fringe or cut with extremely blunt edges, says Sasidharan. Make sure to discuss with your stylist the type of bob you’re after as well as how much time you can devote to styling. “While naturally wavy hair can be left to air dry and topped off with a texture spray, those with finer hair can straighten the lengths for a sleek, glossy finish,” he elaborates. If you have very fine hair, stick to a blunt cut for a fuller look, while thicker manes could use an undercut for a more defined finish.

Regardless of which style you choose, regular trims are a must for the cut to retain its freshness and clean lines. Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment with hair accessories, scarves and braids to keep reinventing your look, Sasidharan signs off.
Bobbin’ with style
Bony Sasidharan, artistic and education ambassador, L’Oréal Professionnel, presents a simple cheat sheet to help you pick the right bob for you:

>> Consider your face shape: While a slightly longer micro bob that is almost chin-length can create an elongating effect on round faces, textured bobs with soft layered can make square faces look less harsh. For a heart-shaped face, pick a bob with face-framing layers.
>> Examine your hair type: Straight hair looks most sophisticated in a sleek, blunt cut, while layers can enhance natural waves or curls.
>> Aesthetic matters: A blunt bob offers a sharp, modern look, while a textured bob has a more relaxed and effortless vibe. To up the ante, go asymmetrical or add an undercut; the latter works best on thick hair.
