Mumbai cops conduct overnight 'All Out Operation', arrests 8 wanted accused

Mumbai Police conducted a special overnight 'All Out Operation' in the city and nabbed as many as eight wanted or absconded accused, the police said on Saturday. According to the police, Mumbai Police conducted the operation on the intervening night of May 3 and 4. The operation involved a coordinated effort by the cops across the city.  Top police officials, including Additional Commissioners of Police, Deputy Police Commissioners, Divisional Assistant Commissioners, and Senior Police Inspectors, were part of the massive operation ahead of the voting for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 in Mumbai on May 20. The motive was keep up and maintain the law and order in the city, sources said. The police said, Mumbai Police's special 'All Out Operation' was undertaken in the city under the guidance of Mumbai Police Commissioner, Vivek Phansalkar and Special Mumbai Police Commissioner, Deven Bharti and Joint Commissioner Satyanarayan Chaudhary. All the regions in city police's jurisdiction, zonal divisions under Mumbai Police jurisdiction and the traffic police were part of the operation in which several offenders were nabbed, the police said. During the operation, a significant combing effort was carried out, resulting in the arrest of as many as eight suspects who had either been wanted or absconded in criminal cases.  Action was taken against 53 people against whom non-bailable warrants were issued, the police said. A thorough investigation under the NDPS ACT cases was also undertaken during the operation, resulting in as many as five drugs cases.  The officials also took action against illegal possession of weapons and preventive actions were taken in 49 cases. "Two illegal firearms were confiscated by the police officials and two people have been arrested in the matter during the special operation," an official said. Action was also taken against 154 illegal hawkers in the city. The operation was also focused on maintaining public safety in Mumbai. The police also inspected 800 establishments, including hotels, lodges, and musafirkhanas. Mumbai Police also conducted nakabandis at 111 spots in the city, a staggering 7233 two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles were inspected during organised nakabandis.  Around 77 motorists were penalised under the Motor Vehicle Act (MV Act) for drink and drive and action was taken against 2440 in various cases of MV Act, the police said.

Maharashtra: Woman held for threatening man, extorting money in Thane

A woman was arrested from Bhayander in Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly cheating and extorting money from a man by threatening to frame him in false cases, police said on Saturday, reported the PTI. The suspect allegedly targeted a 36-year-old shopkeeper whom she got acquainted with in 2021, the police said. The victim is a married man and Adate insisted that he marry her, he said. Based on a complaint, the police on Thursday arrested Sandhya Gajanan Adate, 27, under sections 384 (extortion), 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace ) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, deputy commissioner zone-I Bhayander Prakash Gaikwad said, according to the PTI. Adate underwent a religious conversion to marry him and when he refused to register the marriage as his divorce matter was not settled, she started blackmailing him and threatened to register false cases against him, the official said, as per the PTI. The accused allegedly demanded Rs 30 lakh from the man initially, and he paid her Rs 5 lakh, he said. The victim approached the police with a complaint on May 1, the official said, adding that a probe is on to find out if the woman was a habitual offender involved in such cases in the past, the news agency reported. MNS leader booked by Mumbai Police for extortion on gold trader's complaint Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Avinash Jadhav and one more person were booked by the Mumbai Police for allegedly threatening a gold trader from Mumbai's Zaveri Bazar and seeking extortion of Rs 5 crore, a police official said on Friday, reported the PTI. According to the PTI, as per the 55-year-old complainant, the incident took place on Wednesday in his Zaveri Bazar office in south Mumbai, the official added. "The complainant has said he had a business deal with one Vaibhav Thakkar, whom he had called to his office to sort out some financial issues. Thakkar came along with MNS leader Jadhav, his driver and six others," the official said, as per the PTI. "Jadhav and his aide allegedly beat up the complainant's son in front of police personnel. The complainant also alleged Jadhav threatened him for recovery of Rs 5 crore," the official added, the news agency reported on Friday. On the complaint of the gold trader, Jadhav and one more person were booked under Indian Penal Code sections for extortion etc and further probe was underway, the Lokmanya Tilak (LT) Marg police station official said, as per the PTI. Four killed after milk tanker hits tempo and plunges into river in Thane

Four persons were killed after a tanker transporting milk hit a tempo and plunged into a river at Malshej ghat in Maharashtra's Thane district, the police said on Saturday, reported the PTI. The accident occurred near Borande village on the Kalyan-Nagar road in Thane district around 2 pm on Friday, an official said. The milk tanker and the tempo laden with vegetables were proceeding towards Kalyan from Alephata, inspector Dinkar Chakor of Tokawadi police station in Murbad said. The tanker hit the tempo and fell into a river, he said. A couple travelling in the tanker, its driver and the driver of the tempo, were killed in the accident, while the couple's four-year-old son survived, the official said, as per the PTI. The victims, Akshay Dighe (30), his wife Tejas (26), and tanker driver Dattatraya Waman (42), were killed on the spot, and tempo driver Shakeel Sheikh (29) died soon after, he said, the news agency reported. The police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act against the deceased tanker driver, the official said. Six including two infants killed in accident in Akola Meanwhile, in an another incident, six persons, including two infants, were reportedly killed and three seriously injured in a collision between two cars in Maharashtra's Akola district on Friday, the police said, reported the PTI. According to the PTI, the victims also include relatives of Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Kiran Sarnaik, who represents the Amravati Teacher constituency, the officials said. The accident took place on a flyover on the Akola-Washim highway near Patur Ghat in the afternoon, an official said, as per the PTI. Raghuveer Sarnaik (28), who was the MLC's nephew, his sister and three of their relatives were going towards Akola in an SUV, while four persons were travelling in another car in the opposite direction when the accident took place, the official said, the news agency reported on Friday. Of the five relatives of the MLC, three were killed and two injured, an official said. The accident also claimed the lives of three occupants of the other car and left one injured, the official said. A 9-month-old child, identified as Asmira Ajinkya Amle, and a one-year-old baby were among those killed, the official said. The three injured persons have been admitted to the Government Medical College in Akola, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent to Akol Rural Hospital for autopsy, he added, as per the PTI. Man held from Dehradun for sharing intimate pictures of Thane girl on internet

The police from Maharashtra's Thane city have arrested a 21-year-old man from Uttarakhand capital Dehradun for allegedly sharing the private pictures of a 13-year-old Thane girl on the internet, an official said on Saturday, reported news agency PTI. Accused Rohit Kumar, originally from Saran in Bihar, had befriended the teenager from Thane on social media and allegedly accessed her nude pictures, the official said. When the Thane girl refused to continue chatting with Kumar, he shared her intimate pictures with her relatives and released them on the internet, the official said, reported PTI. On a complaint by the Thane girl, the Vartak Nagar police registered a case on April 1 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and IT Act and launched a probe, reported PTI. Acting in various inputs, they tracked down Kumar to Dehradun and arrested him from there on Thursday, said senior inspector Rajkumar Wakchoure of Vartak Nagar police station, reported PTI. The official said Kumar is a habitual offender and has targeted many girls similarly in the past. In another case, the police in Maharashtra's Thane district on Saturday registered a case after a 14-year-old girl accused a juvenile of repeatedly raping her and pressuring her to "marry" him, an official said, reported PTI. Citing the complaint, the official said that the accused befriended the girl in November 2023 and raped her multiple times saying he wanted to "marry" her and that caste or faith didn't matter to him, reported PTI. Later, he allegedly threatened to assault her if she didn't continue the relationship, the official said. In her complaint, the girl said she stopped interacting with him after he asked her to visit a place of worship. The official from the Kashigaon police station under the Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar police commissionerate said a case has been registered for rape under the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, reported PTI. Meanwhile, the court in Maharashtra's Thane district convicted and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment a man accused of molesting a 15-year-old girl at knifepoint, reported PTI. Special judge D S Deshmukh convicted the 34-year-old under charges of sexual harassment and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, reported PTI. The order dated May 2 was made available on Friday. Special public prosecutor Sandhya H Mhatre said the convict had already served a jail term of three years and eight months, which the court sentenced him to, reported PTI. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused, which will be given to the victim as compensation. (With inputs from PTI)

Watchman held for molesting specially abled woman in Badlapur

The Badlapur Police in Maharashtra's Thane district have arrested a watchman of a society for allegedly molesting a 25-year-old specially abled woman, an official said on Friday. The incident, captured on CCTV footage of the building, was noticed by the parents of the victim who then approached the police to file a complaint, the official said. During the investigation, the police found that the suspect committed the offense under the pretext of taking the keys of the society's office from her, sources said. Sources added that the woman lived with her parents, while her sister also resided in the same building. They said, the victim would usually visit her sister daily in the morning. The keys to the society office were kept at their house, and the watchman would come to retrieve them. "Two days ago, the victim was returning from her sister's house in the same building when the watchman approached her, requesting the key to the society office. He accompanied her and molested her while she was opening the door. He later repeated the same act," said a police officer. The police said that the complainant's elder daughter approached her and asked to check the CCTV footage on the floor where the incident took place. "They checked the CCTV footage and learnt about the incident. Later they approached the police and filed a complaint," the officer said. The Badlapur Police arrested the suspect on Friday and are further investigating the matter. A case has been registered under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the watchman.

Mumbai: Man convicted for murder nabbed for jumping parole

Mumbai Crime Branch's Unit 11 on Friday nabbed a man who had been convicted in a murder and had jumped parole, the police said. According to the police, the accused identified as Rahul Ashok Shardul, 40, was convicted for life imprisonment in a murder case and had absconded while on parole. Rahul Ashok Shardul, a resident of Titwala West in Maharashtra Thane had been serving the sentence at Amravati Central Jail. However, following the grant of parole during the Covid-19 pandemic on July 27, 2021, Shardul failed to return to custody as mandated, an official said. The case against Shardul was originally registered at Tilak Nagar Police Station in Mumbai, he said. The official said that while acting on reliable information regarding him, a team from Unit 11, led by PI Ghone and comprising ASI Tarte, HC Keni, and HC Khatate, launched an operation to apprehend the absconding convict. "He was nabbed from Thane district after using technical analysis and local resources. His location was traced to Bhoir Gaon in Titwala from where he was arrested,"  an official said. Following a medical check-up, Shardul was handed over to the custody of Kalyan Taluka Police Station, Thane, for further legal proceedings, he said.

MNS leader booked by Mumbai Police for extortion on gold trader's complaint

The railway police have booked seven people in connection with the matter, an official said on Friday, the PTI reported. The deceased who was identified as Datta Dunda Bhoir was allegedly attacked inside a train on April 27 between Titwala and Vasind stations during an argument between a group of passengers, he said, as per the PTI. "Two persons, Amol Pardeshi (40) and Tanuj Jammuwal (21), have been arrested in this connection and efforts are on to nab the remaining five," senior police inspector Pandhari Khande of Kalyan railway police told PTI. "The fight took place when one of the accused tried to take pictures of a female passenger. This was objected to by another person. Cop murdered after confronting phone thieves Meanwhile, in an another incident, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Mumbai Police have formed around 10 to 12 teams to investigate the murder case of  Vishal Pawar, a police constable A few days ago, Pawar was attacked by members of the Fatka gang, which stole his mobile phone. The gang is known to strike the hands of people who talk on the phone while standing on the footboard of local trains, causing them to drop their device. Pawar chased them, but the group then allegedly injected poison into him, leading to his death on Wednesday. The GRP at Dadar have registered a murder case and are investigating the matter. According to the police, Pawar, 30, was based with the Local Arms Unit division 3 in Worli. Pawar was recruited to the police department in 2015. He was married, and his wife and parents stayed in Chalisgaon in Jalgaon, while Pawar stayed in Thane. (with PTI inputs)

Post mortem confirms Anuj Thapan died of hanging, say cops

The post mortem report of Anuj Thapan, an accused in the Salman Khan firing case confirmed he died of hanging as there are ligature marks on the neck and signs of asphyxia, a Mumbai police official said on Friday, reported the PTI. On April 14, a firing incident outside the Bandra house of actor Salman Khan.  Anuj Thapan, who was held from Punjab along with his associate Sonu Bishnoi on April 26 and is accused of supplying firearms and bullets for the firing incident, was found dead in the lock-up of the Crime Branch in the commissionerate complex at Crawford Market on Wednesday, as per the PTI. He had allegedly hanged himself with a bed sheet in the toilet of the lock-up, as per police. "The post mortem was conducted on Thursday evening in state-run JJ Hospital in Byculla. As per the report, there are ligature marks on the neck and signs of asphyxia, all of which confirm that he died of hanging," the police official said, according to the PTI. The doctors who conducted the post mortem have reserved their opinions, while the deceased's viscera, tissue and other samples have been preserved for forensic and chemical analysis and organs for histopathology, he informed. "Footage from the lock-up CCTV shows Anuj Thapan going into the toilet alone. It is a clear cut case of suicide," another official said. Four persons, comprising Anuj Thapan, Sonu Bishnoi, shooters Sagar Pal and Vicky Gupta, have been arrested in connection with the firing incident, while gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his brother Anmol Bishnoi have been shown as wanted accused, as per police. State CID begins investigations into death of accused in police lock-up Meanwhile, the State Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Maharashtra Police has taken over the probe and on Wednesday began its investigations into the death of Anuj Thapan, an accused who had been arrested in connection with the Salman Khan firing case, reported the PTI. Anuj Thapan, 32, arrested in the case of the firing outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan's residence allegedly hanged himself in the police lock-up on Wednesday, officials said. The CCTV footage of the lockup will be examined, they said. The state CID has taken over the probe into Anuj Thapan's custodial death and it will investigate whether there was any negligence on the part of Mumbai Crime Branch officials, he said. Usually, if an accused informs the lockup in-charge that he wishes to go to the toilet, a police personnel accompanies him. Maharashtra: 26-year-old man arrested for raping woman in Navi Mumbai

A 26-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a woman residing in Navi Mumbai, the police said on Thursday, reported the PTI. According to the PTI, a spokesman of the Panvel town police station in Navi Mumbai said the accused, a native of Madhya Pradesh was arrested after the woman (35), a housewife residing in a village near Uran coastal town in Raigad district of Maharashtra, lodged a complaint against him. Based on the complaint, the Navi Mumbai Police on Tuesday registered an FIR under IPC section 376 (rape) against the accused, who hails from Morena district of Madhya Pradesh. The victim and the accused were known to each other, said the police spokesman, as per the PTI. The police, quoting the complaint, said on April 29, the accused called the woman to Panvel railway station at around 8.55 am and took her to a hotel under the pretext of returning loan and ornaments he had taken from her. The man sought sexual favours from the victim and when she refused, he raped her, according to the complaint. Meanwhile, in an another incident last week, the Navi Mumbai Police in Maharashtra on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl residing in his neighbourhood in Navi Mumbai township, an official said, reported the PTI. The 40-year-old accused and the victim were residents of the same building in Ulwe area, an official said on Sunday. According to the PTI, on Saturday evening, the victim went to the house of the accused for playing. The accused then allegedly raped her, the official from NRI Sagari police station said. The police said that the accused had earlier also sexually assaulted the girl, showed her obscene photographs and asked her not to inform about it to anyone, as per the PTI. After the offence on Saturday, the girl informed her mother about it. The victim's parents then filed a police complaint following which the accused was arrested, the official said. The accused was booked under Indian Penal Code sections 376 (rape), 376(2)(j)(n) (rape of a female under 12 years of age or a woman incapable of giving consent), 376AB (rape of female under 12 years of age) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the police said. Senior citizen duped of Rs 37 lakh after threatening him of action by Delhi cops

A senior citizen was reportedly cheated of Rs 37 lakh by two online fraudsters in Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai, a police official said on Thursday, reported the PTI. The victim identified the two alleged accused as Rajvir and Vikas, the police said. As per the complainant, between March 13 and 19 this year, they contacted the septuagenarian victim claiming he was named in some serious offences involving human trafficking, money laundering and organ trading, the official said, according to the PTI. "They also sent fake summons to him purportedly from Delhi Crime Branch and forced him to pay Rs 37 lakh to stall police action. After the senior citizen realised he was duped, he approached the cyber cell," the official said, as per the PTI. No one has been arrested in the case and further probe is underway, the Navi Mumbai cyber cell official added. Fraudster pose as govt official, defraud businessman of Rs 2 crore Meanwhile, in an another incident last week, a 42-year-old businessman from Navi Mumbai was duped into handing over Rs 2 crore to a person posing as a government official, the police had said, reported the PTI. The victim, a native of Nerul in Navi Mumbai, was experiencing financial troubles during the Covid-19 pandemic, the PTI reported.  According to the PTI report, the Nerul police officials stated that he met the accused in January 2021, a resident of Parel in Mumbai who claimed to be a high official in the central government's Health Ministry. The imposter offered to arrange a loan for the victim and boasted of contacts to a bank CEO. He proposed using a property as collateral for the loan, the report added. However, because the victim did not possess any property, the accused suggested involving another individual who was reportedly looking for a loan. It was advised that this person mortgage their property, with the loan amount shared between them. Enticed by the proposition, the victim gave over Rs 2 crore to the imposter, which he had earned from a contractor in Telangana for the Pune Metro project, the news agency report further stated.  According to the news report, when the victim wanted to meet with the alleged loan seeker and a bank representative, the fraudster evaded him and eventually vanished.  Following the victim's complaint, Nerul police filed a case against the imposter on Sunday under sections of the Indian Penal Code for defrauding and forgery, the PTI report added.
