After a junior clerk and his son were arrested on the charges of repeatedly raping two teenaged orphans at a government-run children’s shelter home in Shirur, it has come to light that one of the two survivors was raped one more time in March by two boys on the terrace of her school, which is some 500 m from the shelter home.

Yet another aspect of the case to emerge, which further underscores the inhumanity of the crimes, is that the girls are mentally challenged.

Shirur police have registered a fresh case against the boys, who are suspected to be juveniles. They were taken into custody yesterday. The District Women & Child Welfare (DWCW) Officer Minakshi Birajdar has lodged the FIR in this case too.

Inspector Uttam Bhajnavale, investigating officer in the new case, said, “The same girl was lured with some sweets by the two boys, who then molested and raped her on the terrace of the school in March 2014.”

The Shirur police had on Monday arrested clerk Shabbir Bale and his son Bablu who, while staying in their official residence on the shelter premises, allegedly repeatedly raped the two girls over the course of eight months. The violations came to light on July 18 after a complaint was filed by the DWCW.

The home has not had an in-house superintendent for eight years. At the time of the alleged rapes, the government had handed over its responsibility to an overseer of a boys’ home 60 km from Shirur.

After mid-day reported on the paedophilia horror on Wednesday, divisional deputy commissioner Ravindra Patil of Women & Child Welfare Department visited the Shirur home yesterday.

Patil said, “There are four posts vacant including the post of superintendent of the shelter home. Recruitment for these posts will be done immediately. We are inquiring into the alleged rape of the specially-abled girls.”

Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe, who visited the shelter home yesterday, demanded that a full-time superintendent be appointed by the government as soon as possible.
