A 50-year-old cop attached with the Vasai Police allegedly attempted suicide last night by consuming 50 sleeping pills. The officer, identified as Mahesh Gosavi, an assistant sub-inspector, who has been in the police service for nearly 25 years, has alleged mental harassment from senior officials as reason for the drastic step. He is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

The incident came to light after Gosavi sent a WhatsApp message to his friends, claiming he had consumed 50 sleeping pills.
One of his friends immediately informed his wife Madhvi, who was in the house at the time of the incident. She rushed to the bedroom, and found Gosavi asleep. When she tried to wake him up, and he did not respond, she rushed him to a nearby government hospital. "Yesterday, when Mahesh reached home from duty around 9.30 pm, I asked him if he would have dinner. But he told me that he was unwell and wanted to rest. Sometime later, a friend of his called me up and claimed that he had consumed sleeping pills and wanted to end his life," she said.

When Madhvi rushed to the room, she found two empty strips of sleeping pills. She immediately rushed him to a hospital. His condition is said to be stable. "He has been in the department for so many years, but for the last four months, he has been facing a lot of harassment," she alleged.

"We are investigating the case," a senior officer said.
