The Deonar police on Monday arrested a cricket coach for sexually assaulting his student, a 13-year-old girl. The alleged incident took place last week following a training session inside the ‘restroom’ at a sports ground in Govandi, police said. The ground is managed by the BMC. The victim was resting after her training session when the accused came inside and allegedly sexually assaulted her, added police.

The victim, a resident of Ghatkopar, had been travelling to Govandi for the past several months for training. The matter surfaced when the victim’s family approached the Pant Nagar police in Ghatkopar on Monday, “Since the crime took place in Deonar, we registered a zero FIR and handed the case over to Deonar police immediately,” said an officer from the Pant Nagar police station.

Soon after the case was received, Deonar police arrested the accused, identified as Rajendra Nanasaheb Pawar, 41, a resident of Govandi. In her statement to the police, the victim said that the accused had threatened her to not reveal anything, which is why she remained silent and did not inform her parents.

However, her unusual behaviour raised suspicion, and after repeated questioning, she eventually disclosed the horrific details to her parents in a state of anxiety. After the arrest, police discovered that the accused had prior cases registered against him for similar offences. The accused was sent for a medical examination, and subsequently, the court remanded him to police custody for five days.
