Constable Shiv Shankar Gaikwad allegedly murdered the 35-year-old Solapur chilli trader in the police quarters and he had plotted everything, further investigation has revealed. The suspect had allegedly killed Dada Jagdale on the suspicion that he was having an affair with his wife.

The decapitated, partially burnt body of Jagdale was found in a housing society at Antop Hill, a stone's throw  from the office of assistant police commissioner (Sion division) on September 30. The head was, however, missing. Earlier this week, Gaikwad told the crime branch that he had dumped Jagdale’s head in a garbage bin at Mankhurd.

Initially, the couple was evasive and had refused to share information with the police. It was after sustained interrogation that they made some shocking revelations, said the officers. According to police, Gaikwad picked up Jagdale from Dadar around 3.30 pm on September 29 and took him directly to his home at the Worli police quarters. Around 5 pm, when they were in the bedroom, they got into an argument and Gaikwad attacked him with a sharp weapon, police said.

“The blow was so strong that Jagdale collapsed then and there. When Monali went to check what the noise was about, she lost consciousness after finding Jagdale in a pool of blood,” said an officer from the crime branch. “Gaikwad then started chopping up his body with the sharp weapon he had bought some days ago. By the time Monali regained consciousness, he had packed the pieces in bags,” the officer added.

After sunset, Gaikwad took his wife and the bags, and started driving around the city to dump them, police said. He went to Sector 7 of Antop Hill and tried to burn the bags with sanitiser, but it rained that night, they added. He dumped the head in Mankhurd.

A forensic team that visited the police quarters found bloodstains inside Gaikwad’s bedroom. Clotted blood has been found between the tiles of the flooring as well, and the samples have been sent to be matched with the deceased's blood samples, said police. The magistrate court has extended the police custody of Gaikwad and his wife till October 22.
