NEWS of sex workers from Kamathipura increasingly shifting to Turbhe in Navi Mumbai has sparked outrage among residents of the area, who claim the satellite city has always been meted step-motherly treatment.
"Navi Mumbai seems to be the favourite dumping ground of Mumbaikars.

They shifted the jail here, proposed constructing a dumping ground, and also wanted to shift the truck terminal here, which we opposed. Now, they want to dump the sex workers.

After the setting-up of a jail at Taloja that houses criminals and undertrials, the shifting of sex workers to Turbhe has Navi Mumbai residents up in arms

We aren't going to tolerate this. Our real estate market will be affected," said Arvind Goel, president, Navi Mumbai Chamber of Housing.

He added that builders are now planning to approach Navi Mumbai's guardian minister over the issue.

On Sunday, MiD DAY had reported ('Red Light will now shine in Navi Mumbai') on how the ouster of sex workers from Kamathipura, because of redevelopment plans for the area, has led most of them to shift to Indira Nagar in Turbhe.

Budding sex trade

The area, which is a 10-minute drive from Vashi, already has a budding sex trade and houses several chemical and textile production units (see box). Kamathipura's sex workers are hopeful of finding customers among labourers at the units.

Manohar Shroff, a resident of Vashi sector 17, said, "Step-motherly treatment is being meted out to Navi Mumbai.

The shifting of sex workers to Turbhe will affect our local community badly. We will oppose it tooth and nail."
Rashmi Yadav from Seawood, however, thinks the shifting of sex workers to Turbhe is not such a big deal.

"What happens outside the boundaries of my house should not concern me. This will at least provide an outlet for men who want to vent their excessive sexual energy," she said.

Activist's take
"After being thrown out by their landlords, more than 500 sex workers have left Kamathipura for Turbhe already. The rent is low there and they are hoping to find customers among labourers as it is an industrial area," said an activist from Kamathipura.

Did you know?
Women from Osmanabad and Latur migrated to Turbhe in Navi Mumbai after the earthquake in 1993, which sowed the seeds of the sex trade in the area.

Industrial Hub
Turbhe is a prominent industrial area of Navi Mumbai and houses many major telecom firms and companies from other sectors. The area also has many chemical and textile factories.
