Relatives of BARC fire victim rage as cremation is stalled for 36 hrs due to delays in post-mortem and problem in paperwork

It took more than 36 hours for the Singhs to cremate the body of their scientist son Umang Singh (25), who was killed in the fire at BARC on Tuesday afternoon.

This was because the body was handed over to them 30 hours after the incident and when they went to the crematorium, they were refused as the post-mortem (PM) report didn't have a stamp of the hospital.

It is common knowledge that PMs don't take more than three hours from the time a body is handed over to a PM centre. Umang's body was handed over to JJ Hospital on Tuesday evening.

The body was released only after 8 last night, and to make matters worse, the doctors forgot to stamp the copy.

"The copy with the relatives was a photocopy and didn't have a stamp. So, I couldn't allow the cremation.

I asked them to get the original stamped copy and even spoke to the police about it. I was just doing my job," said the officer.

According to Aditya Singh, Umang's brother-in-law, the hospital staff were very uncooperative. "We ran from pillar to post to get the PM report copy.

They took over an hour to just staple the documents. Then they released the body without stamping the copy," he said.

Finally, Dr T Mukherjee, director, chemistry, BARC, had to call the IG to get things going.

The police arrived at the crematorium and convinced the officer that they would get the stamped copy soon and to allow the relatives to cremate the body.

Umang's body was finally cremated after 1 am today. The police then immediately left to get the report stamped.

When this reporter went to the JJ PM centre, one Dr A Rayimane, who was at the PM centre, refused to give any details about the doctor on duty at the time of release of the body. "These are confidential matters," he said.

Meanwhile Partha Bag (26), the other victim of the fire, will be cremated at 11.30 am today.
