18 days on, BMC begins repair work

After repeated pleas and complaints, BMC officials finally begin renovation at Subhadra mansion

If surviving a landslide wasn't enough for the residents of Subhadra Mansion at Walkeshwar, the fact that the debris and repair work hadn't started yet added to their already long list of woes. However, residents can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the BMC began repair work yesterday, 18 days after the tragic incident.

Officials from the civic body finally started to repair the building and clear the debris yesterday at 11.30 am and told MiD DAY that the work would continue for another month. Officials appeared on the site with six workers and added that specialised machinery would be used later to clear the debris and demolish the swimming pool.

"The work will begin in two phases. First we will be clearing all the debris, and later with the help of an electric breaker, the entire structure will be taken off and the illegal swimming pool will be demolished later on," said Pramod Mandrekar, corporator from D ward.

On August 28, residents of the building were rocked when a landslide occurred, causing minor injury to a resident and causing damage to three apartments.u00a0u00a0

Jaydeep Parab, a resident of the building said, "Life is finally becoming normal again. We are happy that they have started the work."

The total cost of renovations is Rs 9 lakh out of which Mangalprabhat Lodha, MLA from Malabar Hills, who has been active in the residents' fight, is sponsoring Rs 5 lakh.
