Past SSC toppers and coaching classes slam HRD Minister Kapil Sibal's idea

SSC toppers and coaching classes are obviously angry about Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal's idea to abolish
Std X board exams.

Sibal's argument of reducing the burden on students and parents seems illogical to them. "My Std X results have helped me a lot in my career.

The minister can think of turning the marks system into a grade system, but not of abolishing it. The idea is absurd," said Amandeep Arora, who topped the SSC exams in 2005.

The 2007 topper, Renuka Deshpande, agreed with Arora. "The Board exams help us to make our foundation very strong. They make us confident to handle every pressure in life," she said.

'Prepare 'em now'

Coaching classes insist that their reason for not agreeing with Sibal's comments is not the tuition fees that they stand to lose.

"It makes a good catch line for the HRD minister to state that he wishes to abolish Std X exams, but it makes no sense.

Board exams have been the foundation for students for years," said Narendra Bhambwani, secretary of Maharashtra Class Owners Association.

Sohail Dhorajiwala, owneru00a0 of Ideal Coaching Classes in Mumbai Central, added, "There are many children who aren't compelled to study at home after they are done with school classes.

Also, students are eventually going to have to deal with the stress of Std XII college Board exams and competitive tests after that.

So why not start preparing to help them to deal with stress at Std X?"

For the Board exams, I studied whenever I was in the mood. My gift (a laptop) for topping in the city was already given to me by my parents on my birthday on June 6.

I want to pursue in engineering and seek admission in IIT Bombay.

Scraping the SSC Board exams is not a solution to reduce a student's stress. It's true that parents and teachers have created hype about SSC exams, but students should not succumb to peer or parental pressure.

I wish to pursue mechanical or chemical engineering at an IIT and then go to IIM. SSC exams should not be abolished, as it helps a student decide which stream to opt for.

Coming second on SSC topper list has given me the confidence to score well in my HSC exams too.
